Larger, heavier pumpkins with smooth, firm rinds are generally best for carving. Consider the size and shape that best suits your design.
You'll need a variety of tools depending on your design's complexity. Basic tools include a carving saw or knife, a scoop for removing the seeds and pulp, and various carving tools for detail work. You may also want stencils, markers, and a candle or LED light for illumination.
To help prolong your pumpkin's life, clean out all the seeds and pulp thoroughly. You can also apply a bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) to the inside to inhibit bacterial growth. Keep your carved pumpkin in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
